KATHY KALLICK & THE WINDFALLS: From The Apple Tree (Live Oak Records)
Kathy Kallick’s 24th release is a departure from her award-winning bluegrass, emphasis on her own compositions (she’s currently released more than 150), and roles a band leader and primary lead singer. She’s just released a country album, with daughters Juniper Waller and Riley Thompson swapping lead and harmony parts with their mum while performing a collection of classic, obscure, and original songs that encompass honky tonk and rockabilly, bluesy country and folky country, and more.
The Kathy Kallick Band accompanies the singers, but with Greg Booth playing pedal steel guitar as well as dobro, and Cary Black playing electric bass. Fiddler Annie Staninec has been rocking Cajun and zydeco music with electric guitarist Mitch Polzak for years, mandolinist Tom Bekeny plays in an eclectic, electric jazz band, and drummer Billy D. Thompson has a huge musical vocabulary from playing in many bands.
As Kathy notes, "Each of these musicians had a time when their ideas were the essential element. And everybody else stirred the pot. This is not an album with a bunch of studio musicians, but more like a family band!”
With family harmonies out front!
